FREE PUBLIC FIREWOOD COLLECTION AT MULE PASTURE The Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District will be offering to the public FREE green and dry firewood (mainly ponderosa pine) to gather and haul at the main entrance to the Mule Pasture Trailhead. The Ranger District will be performing maintenance at the Mule Pasture and Orchard Administrative Sites on May 29, 2024. These sites will be closed to public use from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM while district personnel fall and buck up hazard trees. Felled and downed trees will be bucked into firewood lengths and will be available to the public for taking after 4:00 PM on May 29, 2024, and until supplies last. The available firewood will be piled by district personnel along the entrance road to the main trailhead. From Main Street turn north onto Gallatin Street, cross the railroad tracks and at the Y take a slight right turn onto Jefferson Street, turn right onto Preston Avenue, and go 2 blocks, turn left onto Spruce Street, go 3 blocks, turn left onto Columbia Street, go 1 block, and enter the Mule Pasture Administration Site/Main Trailhead. Piled firewood will be on the left or right of the entrance under the powerlines. You must have a valid Firewood permit; get them from the Plains/ Thompson Falls Ranger District Office or your local Forest Service Office prior to collection.
